Approaching 50, Dirk Bogarde decided to buy a house in southern France near Grasse. In ”An Orderly Man,” the third volume of his autobiography, he says that he was tired of acting in films and needed a rest. His house and his life were to be simple, in contrast to his former 40- room establishment, crammed with guests, in England. He was wrong on both counts.
