Gifts and souvenirs Gifts were first given in early days and Gift giving is such a natural part of any special occasion and is an experience that all cultures around the world take part in. Souvenirs come from the greek word sou, meaning “something cheap or tacky,” and venir, meaning “bought on vacation by a relative or workmate.” Indeed, Homer records the very first souvenir in Book Eleven of “The Iliad”.
