The Art Of Life

From the dawn of man, art has been providing understanding into ourselves and others. The earliest painting dates from a cave in Indonesia over 45,000 years ago proving that art is a universal concept that transends barriers of time and distance. The cave painting depicts the simple geometric shape of a pig so gives us a unique insight into the daily life of these early humans.

Art through the ages

Through the ages art has reflected the feelings of the people and has been used in turn as a form of supression and protest. For example Doomsday Paintings during the Middle Ages inspired an acute terror in the oppressed peasant people in England. Additionally, monarch have posed for portraits, to exude wealth and power; jewels, ruffles and posture ensuring each picture speaks a thouand words. Even in the mist of the 2nd Word War, art played a key political role. In France works of art were plundered from the Louvre by the Nazis as spoilts of war and even today some masterpieces remain lost. But it is perhaps nowadays that we see the best range of art available. In a gallery, ancient Dutch masters can rub shoulders with abstract installations by Tracey Emin and provacative political pieces from graffiti connoisseurs like Banksy and Jef Aerosol.
